Panchangam, also known as Panchang, is an ancient Hindu calendar system that provides essential information about auspicious and inauspicious timings, festivals, and other significant events. Today’s Panchangam holds great importance for Tamil-speaking individuals as it helps them plan their day and make informed decisions based on astrological calculations.
The Tamil Panchangam consists of five elements, namely, Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (auspicious period), and Karana (half-day duration). These elements are calculated based on the positions of the Sun, Moon, and other celestial bodies.
One of the primary aspects of Panchangam is Tithi, which determines the lunar day. There are fifteen Tithis in the waxing phase of the Moon, and the same fifteen in the waning phase, making a total of thirty Tithis in a lunar month. Each Tithi has its own significance and is associated with specific rituals and activities. For example, Ekadashi Tithi is considered auspicious for fasting and praying.
The second element, Vara, refers to the seven weekdays in Tamil, namely, Athiyam, Sonnayam, Thingalayam, Chevvayam, Velliayam, Saniayam, and Nyaayirayam. Each weekday is associated with a particular deity and has its own characteristics. The knowledge of the Vara helps in planning important activities, such as commencing new ventures or organizing events.
Nakshatra, the third element, represents the lunar mansion or constellation through which the Moon passes during its journey. There are twenty-seven Nakshatras in total, each associated with a certain deity and ruling planet. The Nakshatra of a particular day can affect individual behavior and is considered while selecting an auspicious time for important events like weddings or housewarming ceremonies.
Yoga, the fourth element, indicates the auspicious period during the day. There are twenty-seven Yogas, each lasting for a specific duration. The Yoga at the time of birth is believed to influence one’s nature and personality traits. Tamil-speaking individuals refer to the Yoga for determining the suitable time for starting new ventures or making important decisions.
The final element, Karana, represents half a lunar day. There are eleven Karanas in total, each lasting for a specific duration. Karana is significant for deciding the auspiciousness of a particular time for various activities. It is believed that starting a task during certain Karanas can yield positive results, while others may lead to obstacles.
Apart from these five elements, today’s Panchangam also provides additional information such as Rahu Kalam, Gulikai Kalam, and Yamagandam. Rahu Kalam is considered inauspicious for commencing new activities, while Gulikai Kalam and Yamagandam are believed to bring negative outcomes if activities are initiated during these periods.
Individuals who follow the Tamil Panchangam religiously seek guidance from it for planning their daily activities. They consider the Panchangam while scheduling appointments, starting new ventures, conducting ceremonies, or even for basic activities like haircuts or travel.
In today’s fast-paced world, where people are constantly seeking ways to optimize their time and make informed decisions, today’s Panchangam remains a valuable tool for Tamil-speaking individuals. It not only helps them stay connected to their cultural roots but also ensures that they align their actions with auspicious timings, leading to harmony and success in their endeavors.
